The Trek Stop and surrounding areas offer a wide variety of outdoor activities geared toward those interested in learning more about tropical biology, ecology, and archaeology.

Our location, an "edge" between river, woods, and agricultural land, makes it an ideal place to observe the flora and fauna of western Belize. The 40-year-old orchard of mango, coconut, crabu, avocado, and mamay on the site attracts a wide variety of fruit-eating birds, butterflies, and other wild life. Use our extensive collection of reference books and your powers of observation to help add to our growing list of birds, insects, lizards, other animals, and plants that we've identified on the grounds.

Stroll our signed nature trails to learn more about tropical forests and the way they are used by contemporary Maya, and check out the ancient Maya temple on our grounds to see the daunting task archaeologists face in reconstructing ancient ruins.

Visit our Tropical Wings Nature Center, with its interpretive center, butterfly house and farm, hummingbird and medicinal plant gardens, restaurant, and gift shop.

Explore nearby Xunantunich, a partially reconstructed ancient Maya site featuring the second tallest temple in Belize.

Take nature walks in the surrounding countryside, guided by our hiking maps, swim, tube or kayak in the nearby Mopan River, or rent a mountain bike for more distant explorations.

Cross the border to shop in the market of Melchor, Guatemala, stroll to San José Succotz or Benque Viejo for a taste of life in contemporary Maya villages and towns, or hop a bus or share taxi to San Ignacio for a more urban change of pace.

Make day-trips to other points of interest in and around Cayo District. There are caves to explore; rivers, pools, and falls for swimming or canoeing; Maya ruins; wild life areas for hiking and birding; horseback riding; and more. We can help you plan and arrange day tours tailored to your interests.

Or just relax in a hammock with a cold Belikin and a selection from our extensive library of paperbacks.

And in the evening, if you still have energy after your day's activities, you're invited to watch a video from our collection of over 100 nature and feature films.
